Other fluorescents

The specimens shown at right are a man made glass known by several names.  It has been called Vaseline glass, Depression glass, and uranium glass.  The last name due to the trace amounts of uranium used to impart the color in the glass and its fluorescence under both long and short wave ultraviolet lights.  The specimens in the left hand column have a fairly decent glow even under normal lighting conditions.  The glass in the middle column have a nice strong green fluorescent glow   and an electric green glow under short wave ultraviolet light.  It is probably this glass which was used to create the kryptonite crystal for the Superman movies.

The specimen at right is a section of stalactite that has been cut and polished.  We don't know where it is from and therefore included it on this page.  The fluorescent mineral is calcite and as you can see it fluoresces best under long wave ultraviolet lighting.
