about

Pentacrimus astericus.

I like to refer to this specimen as the golden fleece of fossils.  The entire piece is pyrite replaced.  Thus the golden color and my nickname.  If the pyrite replacement was not enough, there is no matrix showing on the surface of this specimen.  Only pyrite replaced fossil (stem, head, and possibly root), as you can see by the close up photos at right, is present.

The specimen measured about 15 to 18 inches square and was about a half inch thick.  The specimen was offered for sale at the February Tucson show several years ago.  We were unable to come up with the price for the specimen and it was sold to another party.

I have never seen another specimen like this.  Nor will I probably, ever see another one.  This was truly a fabulous specimen.  My photos do not do the actual specimen justice (it was much more brilliant).
