Collecting Rhodophyta/bacter in Wyoming.

There are many collection sites (on BLM land and private property) for different fossils and minerals in the state of Wyoming.  Your best bet is to consult books covering the areas in wihich you may be visiting to see what may be available.  Collecting in Wyoming is best from late spring to early fall. The photos below were taken in mid August.  The weather was warm and starting early, to beat the heat is advisable.  As you can see the site is rather desolate and without any shade.  Make sure you bring your own shade and plenty of water.  Always make sure you keep a landmark (your vehicle) in site.  You can easily get lost.  All the terrain looks the same.  The photos below were taken in four different directions. You can see how easily you might get disoriented.  The algal/bacterial mat that was laid down varied from almost nothing to several inches thick.  Time and weathering has broken the mat down to many small and a few larger pieces.

We add new items and information, to the site, monthly.  Be sure to look for page links.  Over half the site (and ALL of the really cool non-product information-like this page) is buried in these page links.  So, just like at the museum, look for all the little things (links) that might otherwise be overlooked.  Enjoy!!!
